Frankincense (Boswellia Sacra) a/k/a Olibanum, originally meant ‘pure or high quality incense’. The essential oil is extracted from gum resin from the tree or shrub of Boswellia, through steam distillation. It is prominent and most commonly distributed from Somalia and grows wild throughout North East Africa.

When you think of frankincense you may remember the Bible story of the three wise men (or magi) bringing their gifts to the newborn King, Jesus (Matthew 2:11). This fact alone, that it was brought on such an important occasion, shows its true significance. It is said to be a gift fit for a priest.
Frankincense was found by archaeologists dating clear back to 3000 BC in Egyptian tombs. It was also a very popular incense that was burned in temples in ancient and current times. Needless to say it has been used for centuries for various uses.

In 2013, Leicester University researchers found that AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid), which is a chemical compound in the resin, has cancer-killing properties and has the potential to destroy ovarian cancer cells!

So why is this amazing resin no longer used regularly? It seems we have replaced this beautiful and amazing natural substance with various man-made synthetic products. However, this does not have to be the case. Frankincense is thankfully still available for purchase and use.

What benefit does frankincense offer?

~Skin Benefits (my favorite) – Great for mature skin and perfect for maintaining balance in an over oily complexion.
~Healing – Said to have cancer fighting benefits.
~Nervousness – Frankincense has comforting and relaxing properties that relieve stress and anxiety.
~ Respiratory – Can help with asthma and chronic cough by calming breathing.
~ Urinary – Can ease symptoms of cystitis.
~ Reproductive – Assists in healing dysmenorrhea and metrorrhagia.
~ Aromatherapy – Has a very calming effect on the body, a woodsy relaxing scent.

How can you use frankincense?

DIFFUSING: Vaporize it into the air, put a few drops in the bath or apply to the skin in a roller ball with a carrier oil. It is also safe to take internally and in ancient times was thought to have been chewed to receive its calming effects.

MAKE AN ESSENTIAL OIL ROLLER: Simply fill your glass essential oil roller with a carrier oil, leaving a little room at the top of the roller. Apply the desired amount of essential oil drops. If you are unsure what a carrier oil is, here is an easy GUIDE for you. Seal with roller cap and lid.

You will need about 5-10 drops of frankincense per 10 mls of carrier oil. Your typical/standard roller bottle is about 10 mls. My go-to carrier oil is Sunflower Oil since it is easy on the skin and usually reasonably priced. Mix together in your roller bottle and apply to the wrists, feet and/or back of the neck or forehead.

A Word of CAUTION about frankincense: This amazing essential oil can occasionally cause vivid dreams in some individuals. If you have trouble sleeping or do not like this side effect do not use it at bedtime.

For frankincense essential oil – Contact a local essential oil distributer, local health store or order online: or or even via

Make sure your oil is 100% pure and that it is not mixed with a carrier oil or some sort of filler, unless of course you want it that way. Check it out and enjoy the health benefits!

Easy ~All Natural~ DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner

Easy ~All Natural~ DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner

In the past I have bought those expensive toilet bowl cleaners but was frustrated with the harmful ingredients and the cost. I learned this amazingly easy do-it-yourself recipe from one of my many holistic books but altered it.  Here is the recipe I use:

* 1/4 Cup Baking Soda
* 1/2 Cup Vinegar

The original recipe called for 1 cup of each and it seemed like too much. All you do is pour the baking soda in first, then the vinegar. Watch it foam up and let it sit for several minutes. Then scrub out. So easy!

Making your own wood furniture polish is very easy to do. You only need a handful of ingredients and it is safe enough to eat! All you need is the following:

Spray bottle, measuring cup & funnel

1/4 cup almond oil
4 tablespoons pure lemon juice *
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Mix these ingredients together and keep in a small spray bottle. Works great for wood furniture, faux wood furniture, faux leather, and real leather furniture.
UPDATE: Over time I felt that there was a build up on my wood furniture using this formulation so I tweaked it by taking out the vanilla extract and increasing the lemon juice. It works great! So if you find that the above formula is too ‘heavy’ for your furniture, try using the updated recipe:

1/4 cup almond oil
1/2 cup lemon juice

Mix together and store in a small spray bottle.
Need a label? No problem. Print this one and tape to your bottle:

Wood Furniture Polish

It smells amazing and works great! Super easy to make as well. Since it is an all natural product some separation will occur, so shake before each use. Lasts about a month without refrigeration.

* You do not have to use organic
