HOW TO TREAT THE NECK
One of the most obvious signs of aging is when the skin on our neck begins to wrinkle. As we age, our skin elasticity weakens making the neck area appear loose and weathered. Aging is often most noticeable on the face, neck and décolleté. Surprisingly, the skin on our neck is different than our face as there are fewer sebaceous glands. Our sebaceous glands produce the oil that naturally lubricants the skin. Lack of oil can cause the skin to age more quickly, causing the neck to need special treatment.
Thankfully there are a few things you can do to keep your neck and chest area looking youthful. First, always include this area in your daily skin care routine. Second, exfoliate. The neck can be more vulnerable to dryness and dead skin cell accumulation. By exfoliating often, it will help rejuvenate and smooth the skin.
DIET
Vitamins C and E are also helpful for the neck area. By applying important vitamins to the skin it will help stimulate collagen reproduction which will increase firmness. Having products that contain these essential vitamins (like the Intense C Serum or the Polishing Night Cream) can help keep the neck looking young. Diet also plays a big role in overall skin health. Eating foods high in vitamin A and beta-carotene, including fruits and vegetables (such as berries and carrots) may increase cell turnover. Additionally, consuming an antioxidant packed diet will help protect your skin. Foods high in essential fatty acids (alpha-linolenic and linoleic fatty acids), such as walnuts or olive oil, will also help skin cells stay hydrated and glowing. Consuming enough water every day will help as well.
EXERCISE
Facial exercises and massage are beneficial. Getting regular facials is useful for cell turnover and increased blood flow. Additionally, regular exercise ultimately firms your neck when you are working out your whole body. Doing something physically active every day, helps the skin look youthful.
Keeping your head up throughout the day is also important. We are constantly looking down at phones, laptops, or even books. This can be hard on your neck as well as your spine. Horizontal wrinkles can develop on your neck from inactivity since the neck skin and muscles are thinner than the skin on your face.
BE GENTLE
Last but not least, avoid wool and rough fabrics that can irritate the neck area. When the neck gets irritated we are more likely to pull at the skin or damage it. Wear loose, cotton or breathable fabrics around the neck and décolleté.
