Lemon Properties
The scent of lemon can brighten your day. It has such an invigorating, refreshingly clean scent. Aside from the pleasant aromatherapy that lemon offers the senses, it is also beneficial in skincare.
Lemon has antiseptic and antibacterial qualities that can repair and brighten the skin. It is also packed with vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, magnesium and potassium, which the skin happily absorbs. Lemon is also full of free-radical fighting antioxidants that can even out skin tone and smooth the skin.
Benefits
Since lemon has a high acidic level it can act as an astringent. An astringent has the ability to decrease inflammation and oil that may contribute to acne and breakouts. Astringents also break down dead skin cells, which can clean out the pores and allow for fresh new skin to surface. Lemons naturally contain citric acid (a natural form of alpha hydroxy acid also known as AHA). This natural citric acid has the ability to brighten the skin and even out skin tone.
A Word of Caution
Any citrus type substance on the skin can create inflammation, irritation and/or sunburn when exposed to UV rays from the sun. If you have sensitive skin, only use lemon-containing products at night and rinse them off in the morning, or avoid all-together, depending on your reaction to citrus ingredients.
However, if you can use it in your skin care, give lemon a try this season and enjoy the benefits!
