Why Make Your Own?
Kids love bath bombs! Unfortunately, the ingredients in them are not always the best. In fact, before I started making my own products, I would buy bath bombs for my daughter and she often would get skin irritation from them.
Ingredients Matter
Making bath bombs can be a little tricky, but once you get used to them, you will really enjoy making them! I like adding Epsom salts to mine for added benefits of muscle tension and relaxation. Epsom salts can also help ease colds and calm the body. To learn more about Epsom salts, check out this post.
I also love using carrot seed oil. Carrots are very nourishing for the skin and have many added benefits, including antioxidants. And as many of you know, adding oats to the bath can help ease skin irritation. Oats have an amazing way of relieving itchiness and inflammation topically.
Even with all of these amazing ingredients, citric acid can still cause skin irritation. If you have a child with very sensitive skin, I would recommend making a bath soak instead or using some gentle bath salts.

DIY Bath Bombs
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Baking Soda
- 1/2 Cup Epsom salts
- 1/2 Cup Citric Acid
- 2 Tablespoons Oat Flour
- 1 Teaspoon Carrot Seed Oil*
- ~1 Teaspoon Water
- ~15 Drops Food Coloring
- ~20 Drops Essential Oil
Instructions
- Mix together first 4 ingredients, then add oil and make sure is mixed well. Then divide mixture into different bowls if you would like different colors. Then add desired food coloring and desired essential oils.
- We made two colors and added 5 drops frankincense essential oil and 15 drops wild orange essential oil to our batch.
- Add a few drops of water to each bowl to create a little stickiness. Stir immediately after putting drops in so it does not fizz much. You do not need much water.
- Finally press mixture into silicone molds and let sit overnight or for several hours. Once hardened, pop them out and enjoy. You can save them in ziplock baggies for later use.
- *can substitute another oil for carrot seed oil such as castor, olive, sunflower, etc.
Have fun making your own bath bombs. Try adding different essential oils to make different scents or mixing different colors or even adding little trinkets inside the bath bombs for a surprise.
