SKIN OIL BENEFITS
When my children were little, they had very sensitive skin. I had a difficult time finding a moisturizer that didn’t irritate their skin. Almost every lotion we tried caused an eczema-like rash, leaving the skin even more irritated than before. We did find a few products made with cleaner, gentler ingredients that seemed to work better, but they came with a hefty price tag.
Additionally, some petroleum-based products didn’t seem to cause as much irritation, but I wasn’t comfortable using them long-term because of concerns about their ingredients and potential health risks. I wanted something that was both effective and made with ingredients I felt good about putting on my children’s skin.
CREATE YOUR OWN
After spending countless hours researching natural ingredients and experimenting with different combinations, I finally had an easy formula that worked great! While it’s technically a skin oil rather than a lotion, it serves the same purpose by deeply moisturizing while creating a protective barrier to help lock in moisture. Since it doesn’t contain water, it’s also incredibly simple to make and naturally has a longer shelf life.
This homemade skin oil has been a game changer for our family, and I’m excited to share my favorite recipe with you!
DIY Nourishing Skin Oil
Ingredients
- 1/4 Cup Pure Almond Oil*
- 1/4 Cup Pure Grape Seed Oil
- 1 full dropper of Sea Buckthorn Seed Oil
- (*Sunflower oil and jojoba oil are nice alternatives if you are not able to use almond oil.)
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients.
- Put in a sealable container that is easy to use (I use a glass amber bottle with a dropper bottle).
It works best if you apply the oil after a shower or bath. You do not need much, and it spreads and absorbs quickly. For extremely sensitive skin, leave the oil formula unscented. Lavender and frankincense are both nice essential oils to include if they do not irritate your skin.
