What is Apple Cider Vinegar?
Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is made by the fermenting of sugar from apples. This fermentation process causes acetic acid to form, which is an active ingredient in vinegar. Acetic acid is thought to be responsible for many of the health benefits that ACV offers.
A Bit of History
ACV has been used for thousands of years. In fact, around 400 BC, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, prescribed Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with honey for a variety of ailments, including coughs and colds. Interestingly, a dilution of Apple Cider Vinegar was drank by ancient Persians to keep the body lean. And many health advocates in our current era often claim ACV can help manage weight if a small, diluted amount is consumed each day.
There are other applications as well. For thousands of years, Apple Cider Vinegar has been used to preserve food, and even today it is regarded as a useful, non-toxic cleaning product. One of my favorite benefits of ACV are, of course, that it benefits the skin. However, with all of the concern about getting Coronavirus, I really wanted to share more of the health benefits to help keep us strong and healthy!
Fighting Off Colds and Viruses
Taking Apple Cider Vinegar each day can create an alkaline environment inside your body which can help kill off bacteria and viruses. ACV can be pretty harsh to drink straight. Instead try adding a tablespoon to a glass of water or a little bit of juice.
For everyday health, one tablespoon per day is recommended. However, holistic health professionals suggest drinking a tablespoon of ACV at the first sign of illness and repeating it several times a day until the symptoms subside, to give your body that extra boost.
What About Kids?
Kids also can benefit greatly by taking Apple Cider Vinegar. However, there are a few things you should know. Because their immune systems may be a little more sensitive than an adult, it is best to purchase pasteurized Apple Cider Vinegar for their consumption. Also, most kids are not willing to drink this bitter smelling remedy. It is better to try to hide it in their food or beverages. Mixing it in salad dressing is one creative way to get it in. Personally, I have found that mixing it in with juice is helpful and often goes unnoticed.
Additionally, children do not need as much ACV as an adult. As stated above, an average adult dosage is about 1 tablespoon whereas a child dose is only 1-2 teaspoons.
For Those Over 55
Apple Cider Vinegar is a great supplement to consider for those over 55 as it can lower cholesterol, ease joint pain, improve digestion and, most importantly, help fight off viruses. So put Apple Cider Vinegar on your grocery list and start this simple preventative measure to stay healthy!
