BENEFITS OF WHITE WILLOW BARK
White Willow Bark is mentioned quite a bit in skin care and for good reason! There are both health and beauty benefits to using this wonderful bark from ancient times.
Willow Bark comes from the low growing deciduous willow tree containing long slender green leaves. In the 1800s, chemist Felix Hoffman discovered that the active ingredient salicin could be isolated and used to relieve pain. He eventually used this knowledge to create the company Bayer. However, using pure willow bark, which is what we prefer, goes back even further in time. Around 460 to 377 B.C., Hippocrates believed that chewing on willow bark in its pure form relieved pain and fevers. The ancient Egyptians also had several remedies containing willow bark concoctions.
USED IN SKIN CARE
Willow bark is used in natural skin care formulas because of its natural content of salicylic acid. Salicylic acid can remove old and dead skin cells and help promote new and fresh cells for a more youthful complexion. As we age, we need to dissolve skin cells more often. By using products containing willow bark, you can improve skin tone more naturally.
Willow bark also offers anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve swelling and sensitivity. This makes it ideal for conditions of rosacea as well as sensitive blemishes, cystic acne and even aging skin. Willow bark can also minimize age spots and discoloration due to its mild exfoliating properties.
